In his role, Matt coordinates solutions for UPMC patients, visitors, or guests who need a disability accommodation at the hospital, helping them receive high-quality health care. UPMC’s mission is to ensure that every patient gets the right care, in the right way, at the right time, every time, and Matt plays a big role in that work. Outside of work, Matt pursues a number of interesting hobbies, interests, and passions that set him apart! In his own words, Matt shares a bit more about his role as an Educator, Bow Tie Aficionado, and Athlete, and how he’s able to thrive at UPMC.

Educator

“The principles I’ve learned…have given me the tools and confidence to present to any audience.”

After graduating high school, I had the same question every student has: “What do I want to do as a career?” I had acquired my spinal cord injury two years before, but knew I could do anything I wanted. Although I didn’t pursue teaching in the classroom full-time, the principles I learned in my undergrad in Elementary Education and Masters in Adult Learning and Training gave me the tools and confidence to present to any audience regardless of its size or what they do for UPMC.

Bow Tie Aficionado

“I have a collection of over 100 bow ties that let me be uniquely different!”

I live by the motto of “if you can’t stand up, stand out” which I try to embody every day. In addition to my bright green wheelchair I have a collection of over 100 bow ties that let me be uniquely different! They range from fun patterns to animals and everything in between. My love for bow ties started in college and I cannot tell you the last time I wore anything different!

Athlete

“I never thought in my wildest dreams I would be on the same court or ice with top-level athletes from around the world!”

I have always been a competitive person in all things… even Monopoly! One of my favorite thing to do with my competitiveness is play sports. They always say you have to try everything once, so I did. I have been water skiing, kayaking, hand cycling and tried softball, but my favorites are wheelchair boccia, wheelchair rugby, and curling! All three of these sports have given me an opportunity to travel and compete with high-level athletes who compete on a national and international level. I never thought in my wildest dreams I would be on the same court or ice with top-level athletes from around the world!

"Be You, Be UPMC" Means...

“I can bring my whole self to work.”

To me Be You, Be UPMC means that I can bring my whole self to work. It is a place I can be an educator, bow tie aficionado, and athlete. My differences are celebrated and appreciated. The work that I do is valued and I know it is having real impact and making real change. I love that at UPMC I can be who I want to be and be part of something great!
