Time. We measure it in minutes and reflect on it through memories. We fill it with work, with rest, with responsibilities, with fun. We know we can’t get it back, and so we try our best to make the most of the meaningful moments we have.

Life changing is…finding joy in each day.
Hop on a Teams call with Sarah and you might just get to meet another colleague…her dog, Graham! Sarah’s position at UPMC allows her to often work from home, which means she gets to enjoy extra time with her furry friend. In addition to Graham, Sarah also has a small clientele of dog-walking clients in her neighborhood, an activity that also brings more fun to her life and daily schedule.During the school year, Sarah also pours back into the Pittsburgh community through her role as a cheerleading coach at a local high school. Sarah reflected: "What I love most about coaching cheer is being able to share in the same passion we all have for the sport. Between myself, the coaching staff, and the team, one thing is for sure: we all love cheerleading. It’s also really special to pass down the things I’ve learned throughout my experience as a cheerleader to these kids; from cheer skills and techniques to life lessons like being on time, working with a team, and respecting one another. It is so fulfilling to be a coach and I absolutely love it!"

Life changing is…quality time with my people.
Time with her loved ones is something that Sarah really prioritizes. Given that she has a role at UPMC that is flexible, Sarah has been able to travel to visit her boyfriend, Tyler, who is in the Navy. When he is able to be back in Pittsburgh, Sarah and Tyler enjoy grabbing a bite to eat at various spots in the Strip District or enjoying the view up on Mt. Washington. When she’s not traveling, home is something that is really important to Sarah, especially because it’s where she gets to spend time with her mom, dad, and sister. Like Sarah, her sister and her mom are also UPMC employees; Sarah’s sister has been at UPMC for 8 years working in behavioral health, and her mom has been at UPMC for over 40 years as a bedside nurse.

Life changing is…time for what matters most.
Sarah doesn’t just believe that time is valuable, she knows this truth well. Time matters, especially when it comes to having time for what matters most. Over the last few years, Sarah and her family have learned this lesson through the challenging experience of her father’s cancer diagnosis and treatment. In 2021, Sarah’s dad was diagnosed with colon cancer and began treatment at UPMC Mercy and UPMC Hillman Cancer Centers. With tears in her eyes, Sarah shared with her teammates in the winter of 2022 that her father had completed treatment and had made a full recovery. Being able to support her family and be present with them through her dad’s journey was something that Sarah does not take for granted. Gratitude is something that guides Sarah’s life and permeates her conversations, and her family’s story is just one of many reasons why.

Life changing is...time for the things you care about.
For Sarah, that means maintaining a life filled with meaningful activities and experiences alongside people she loves. Sarah credits her supportive colleagues at work with playing a huge role in helping her live a life that has time for family, (furry) friends, and fun. As Sarah’s future continues to take shape, she feels supported to make the most of each moment at work, at rest, and all the places that life takes her next.
