Building an outstanding workforce is a big task, and it’s one that we take seriously at UPMC. It’s not just about having an amazing team of Life Changers today – it’s about looking to the future as well. We’re committed to training, developing, and equipping young leaders within our organization who will help carry us into the coming years and continue changing health care for the better. That’s where UPMC’s Finance Management Rotational Program comes in!
UPMC’s FMR Program is a unique three-year development program that provides recent college graduates with the tools and experiences to become a finance leader in the health care industry. FMRs rotate through positions in Health, Insurance, and Corporate Services to gain a comprehensive background of UPMC’s Integrated Delivery Finance System and to discover where they best fit within UPMC. Let’s get to know former FMRs who have continued in their careers at UPMC!
Michael: I joined the FMR program in 2014 because I am passionate about health care, and I wanted a role that afforded the ability to jump start my career. The FMR program allowed me to meet both of these goals. Through the program, analysts are tasked with meaningful work across multiple functional areas of UPMC as well as access to executives both within and outside of finance. The FMR program taught me to manage projects, work on cross-functional teams, leverage automation tools to better streamline reporting, and create actionable analytics that drive change.
I also enjoyed that the FMR program offers the ability to give back to the community; some of my favorite memories in program came from participating in various community service events such as volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club. As a UPMC employee you gain access to various benefits, for example I used the education benefit to obtain a Master of Accounting at UNC. I have taken the rich experiences offered by the FMR program and leveraged them to hold progressive roles in the Health Services Division where I currently serve as a Director of Finance for UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, the System Nursing Service Center, and System Quality.
Morgan: The FMR Program was an impactful and rewarding way to begin my journey at UPMC. Upon graduating from Grove City College, I was eager to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and gain a robust understanding of the health care industry. Those years in the program were transformative to my professional development and have given me the skills and experience necessary to progress in my career.
Rotating through the various divisions (corporate, insurance services & health services) provided me with unique and challenging opportunities while allowing me to make value-added contributions to the organization. I also appreciated the various networking opportunities that were made available, as I now have a network of trusted mentors that continue to offer support or guidance when needed. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my career at UPMC thus far and continue to stay because of the professional opportunities provided and ongoing support of finance leadership.
Isaac: The FMR Program has served as the ideal launching pad for my career. Each rotation has provided meaningful work and unique experiences that have enhanced my understanding of health care finance and developed both my technical and soft skills. Undoubtedly, one of the best parts about the FMR Program and ultimately UPMC is the people. Over the past three years, I have had the opportunity to establish meaningful connections and build my professional network through executive exposure, cross-functional projects, and program events. The FMR Program provides a great built-in network and support system that I have been able to lean on early in my career. As my time in the program ends, I am thankful for the ways in which it has helped me grow as an analyst and a professional. I look forward to leveraging these experiences throughout the rest of my career journey.
Alyssa: Being an FMR at UPMC has been one of the most rewarding experiences. I began the FMR Program in January 2021, completely remote and not knowing much about health care finance. Having recently graduated from college and moving to Pittsburgh for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect from a career as an FMR. From the moment I started the program, I’ve had the support of executives and colleagues with exciting opportunities to learn and collaborate. One of my favorite parts of my FMR journey has been the relationships I’ve been able to cultivate through projects, networking, and having a cohort of colleagues that quickly became friends. This program has given me the opportunity to learn and grow as a financial analyst while rotating through multiple areas of health care finance, rapidly expanding my network within the organization, and enhancing the ability we have as FMRs to contribute to meaningful change at UPMC.
With a vested commitment to talent growth through skill development, executive exposure, and relationship-building, the FMR program continuously generates some of UPMC Finance’s top talent.
